Your Custom Breast Augmentation Procedure
Dr. Piazza plans every detail of the procedure prior to the day of surgery to create predictable, natural-looking results. His experienced surgical team members work seamlessly with Dr. Piazza to implement his comprehensive treatment plans, minimizing the duration of each procedure.
Dr. Piazza performs breast augmentation as an outpatient procedure in a fully accredited ambulatory surgery center near his practice. In general, the procedure takes 1 to 2 hours and uses general anesthesia.
Breast Implant Options
Although most women choose cohesive silicone breast implants, Dr. Piazza offers his breast augmentation patients a full spectrum of breast implants in both silicone and saline. Implant selection and the shape of a patient’s natural breasts affect the preferred surgical technique, but minimizing any signs of surgery is always a top priority.
Material
Popular implant material options include:
Cohesive silicone (or “gummy bear” implants): Our most popular selection, these implants have a natural look and feel and hold their shape even when damaged.
Silicone gel: These implants are approved by the FDA for women ages 22 and up. They more closely mimic the look and feel of natural breast tissue than saline implants.
Saline: These implants consist of a silicone shell containing sterile saltwater. The FDA-approved implants are for women ages 18 and up.
Size
For accuracy, implant sizes are measured by volume in cubic centimeters (cc) rather than cup sizes. The ideal implant size is one that gives you attractive curves while maintaining balance with your frame and proportions. You can choose a more dramatic increase or a subtle enhancement.
Shape
Choose between round or anatomically shaped (“teardrop”) implants. Shaped implants are typically best for women with little natural breast tissue.
Profile
Profile affects how far your breast projects from your chest. A low-profile implant features a wider base with less projection, while a high-profile implant features a narrower base with more dramatic projection.
Placement
Implants may be placed either under the pectoralis muscle (submuscular), above the muscle (subglandular), or a blend of both, wherein the top part of the implant is placed below the muscle while the lower part is placed below the breast tissue (partial submuscular).

Options for breast augmentation incisions include:
Periareolar: A semi-circle around the bottom of the areola
Inframammary: A line hidden along the crease under the breast
Transaxillary: An incision hidden in the underarm

Dr. Piazza offers innovative techniques and products to effectively address patients’ needs. For certain cases, he uses Strattice, an FDA-approved, regenerative tissue matrix that supports implants. This “internal bra” strengthens weaker tissue, reduces the appearance of irregular contours, and prevents postoperative complications such as capsular contracture. Dr. Piazza most commonly uses Strattice for thinner patients and revision cases, but an in-person consultation is the best way to determine candidacy for this and other considerations.

Your recovery plan begins long before you enter the operating room. Dr. Piazza creates highly detailed surgical guides to ensure minimal trauma and procedure time. Due to this innovative and highly specialized approach, patients can begin to enjoy their results almost immediately.
Typically, patients report minor soreness, and they are able to return to their daily activities within a few days. Minimal bruising rarely occurs, and the vast majority of patients take only over-the-counter pain medication.
This short and relatively comfortable recovery period is a significant benefit of choosing Dr. Piazza as your breast augmentation surgeon, but we’re confident that your beautiful results will be what you remember most. After your surgery, Dr. Piazza and his team will be with you through every step of the recovery process, and they want to celebrate with you as your body fully heals.
You’ll have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Piazza at the following post-op milestones:
6 Days: Remove incision dressings and answer initial questions.
3 Weeks: Assess incision healing and initiate Dr. Piazza’s scar protocol.
3 Months: Ensure patient comfort and evaluate progress. Assess for release for full activities.
6 Months: Celebrate results with photos.
1 to 4 Years: Check in annually to document results.
You’ll have the opportunity to share feedback and ask questions during all stages of the recovery period. We’ll provide you with detailed post-op instructions, and you’ll have convenient access to the resources you that best meet your needs.
Breast Augmentation at a Glance
Goal: To increase the size and refine the shape of the breasts with Natrelle INSPIRA® SoftTouch smooth, round, silicone gel breast implants.
Procedure: Incisions are hidden underneath the breast in the fold. The incisions typically heal extremely well and over time become nearly invisible. Dr. Piazza adheres to the “No-Touch” technique utilizing a Keller Funnel™ to place the implant in the breast.
Anesthesia: General anesthesia using laryngeal mask airway (LMA) to provide a smooth surgical experience.
Procedure length: Less than 1 hour.
Aftercare: The incisions are closed in multiple layers of dissolvable sutures. We will clip one suture in the office approximately 6 days following the procedure. The incision will also be covered with a Steri-Strip™ and a clear plastic dressing called a Tegaderm™. This will stay in place until your first follow-up visit. This will also allow you to shower the day of surgery.
Recovery: During the first few days after surgery, the patient will experience some chest pressure or tightness in the breasts. Most patients recover very well with acetaminophen and ibuprofen, which are 2 over-the-counter medications. Most patients will return to work within 3 to 4 days and are back to full activities without restrictions at 6 weeks. Bruising is uncommon with this procedure but can sometimes be visible on the sides of the breasts where Dr. Piazza has injected anesthetic medication.

Dr. Piazza Answers Common Questions
What’s the difference between breast augmentation and breast implants?
Breast implants are placed within the breasts during breast augmentation surgery. Many people incorrectly use these terms interchangeably.
Will my implants need to be replaced?
While breast implants are not meant to last a lifetime, they don’t have a specific expiration date. In the past, the FDA recommended replacing implants every 10 years; today, many women have had their implants for more than 20 years. I perform elective implant exchange for patients who want to change the aesthetics of their implants. I also perform revision surgery if an implant ruptures or there are complications from the original surgery.
What is an alternative to breast implants?
Women who want a modest increase in breast volume (about a cup size) without breast implants might consider fat transfer breast augmentation. I remove fat from an area where it’s unwanted (such as the belly or thighs) using liposuction, process it with the REVOLVE™ fat transfer system, and then inject the purified fat into the breasts. I also combine breast implants with fat transfer to enhance the cleavage and to smooth out the transition between the implant and the upper chest, as well as other areas.
Can breast augmentation correct asymmetry or reduce the appearance of sagging skin?
Absolutely! I welcome cases that may appear more challenging, and I frequently combine techniques to correct asymmetry or reduce the amount of excess skin while creating fuller, shapelier breasts with implants. I also often perform breast lift with augmentation for women who have excess skin due to weight loss or aging.
Can a breast augmentation be combined with nipple correction surgery?
Yes. I often enhance the final results of breast augmentation procedures by performing nipple correction surgery to reshape stretched, enlarged nipples or fix inverted nipples. I discuss my techniques for performing these procedures on my blog.
Can I combine breast augmentation with other procedures?
Yes. Combining breast augmentation with complementary procedures such as liposuction and tummy tuck surgery is a popular and effective solution for women who want to address multiple cosmetic concerns all at once. This combination procedure is commonly known as a mommy makeover. Whether you’re focused on improving the appearance of your breasts or you’re looking for a complete rejuvenation, there are a number of effective surgical procedures that can be combined to exceed your cosmetic goals.
