The popularity of dermal filler lip injections to enhance lip shape and size continues to grow rapidly at The Piazza Center in Austin, TX. Lip fillers are a great way to add definition to one of the most prominent parts of the face. But as with any cosmetic procedure, it’s essential to understand your options in order to get the best results.

Here is everything you need to know about your treatment with us!  Every treatment we provide is based on safety, excellence, wellness, hospitality and creating a life-long relationship with you. During a lip filler consultation and treatment at The Piazza Center, you can expect your provider to assess the lip tissue, then use that information to choose the right filler for your needs and use her advanced injection technique to achieve the best possible results.

Assessing Lip Tissue

First, we assess the lip tissue.  We start by asking ourselves questions to identify the best treatment for you. What is the integrity of the lip tissue? Is the lip tissue firm and thick or is it thin and has laxity?  This is the first step in choosing the right filler for you.  Loose, thin lips will need a smoother, more malleable filler. Younger patients and patients with a darker skin type usually present with thicker skin tissue thus needing a more robust filler.

Choosing the Right Filler

Lip fillers are made of hyaluronic acid in a synthetic gel base.   Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in our bodies. It is what lubricates our joints and holds moisture in our skin. Hyaluronic acid can attract and retain up to 1,000 times its own weight in water. This is why it is an ideal lip filler. It can smooth wrinkles, hydrate your skin, and plump it for results that last months at a time.  The manufacturing process of dermal fillers is what gives us the variety of options to choose from. This enables us to to best integrate them into the patient’s lip tissue.

We also consider the best patient outcomes when choosing a filler.  We carry a strategic line of fillers to best meet our patients needs and goals, including the JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® families of injectable fillers at our Austin plastic surgery practice. The consistency of these fillers covers a wide spectrum.  I like to describe the filler consistencies in terms of butter.   From melted butter, butter sitting out on the counter, to refrigerated butter and frozen butter, there are a variety of consistencies available.

Our Most Popular Lip Filler Choices

JUVÉDERM Volbella – Volbella’s consistency is most like melted butter. Part of the JUVÉDERM family of dermal fillers, Volbella is an FDA-approved filler that helps enhance the lips while also decreasing the appearance of fine lines around the mouth. Volbella can last up to twelve months or longer when injected into the lips.  Volbella is a great option for someone with thin tissue and smaller lips, aging lips, or for someone who wants hydration and not much volume change.

Restylane Kysse – The consistency of Kysse is comparable to butter sitting out on the counter. Kysse is a member Restylane family of fillers. It is the first lip filler designed with XpresHAn Technology™, which helps keep the lips flexible and soft, while offering natural-looking volume. Kysse is proven to last up to one year following injection. Kysse is great for patients with healthy tissue that want definition to their lips and increased height or volume.

JUVÉDERM Ultra XC – JUVÉDERM Ultra XC’s consistency is similar to frozen butter. JUVÉDERM Ultra XC is one of the most popular and well-known brands of lip filler.  If you are seeking a drastic increase in volume, this is the filler for you.  This is a great choice for achieving naturally fuller or larger lips or enhancing lips with thick tissue.  The results from JUVÉDERM can last up to twelve months.  You will see a decrease in lip size before this time. That is because the filler is slowly metabolized by your body over time. Longevity is related to how fast you personally metabolize the filler; some people metabolize quicker than others.

Injection Technique

Injection technique is everything when it comes to giving our patients optimal lip enhancement results. Did you know that achieving a beautiful pout isn’t as simple as just injecting the lip? Here are two of the most popular techniques we use:

Traditional Lip Filler Injecting Technique – I typically choose this technique for someone who is wanting hydration and to add overall volume to their lips.  With this technique, filler is injected into the body of the lip with retrograde injections to address the structure of the lip and then into the vermillion border with retrograde injections to create definition to the lips and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. With this technique, the injection is performed in a horizontal manner.

Tenting/Fencing – I love this technique for creating volume, height, and keyholes. This is the technique I use to improve asymmetries as well. With this technique, the needle is injected right into the vermillion border or directly below in a vertical manner which “tents” the lip or creates “fences.” The length of the fence is what gives the lip vertical height.  This is also how I create pillowy bottom lips.
