Breast Augmentation Overview

Breast Augmentation: Tailored Excellence With Dr. Piazza

Women consider breast augmentation for many different reasons. Changes from pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, fitness, or simply time can alter the shape and volume of the breasts. For others, the goal is subtle enhancement, improved symmetry, or restoration rather than dramatic change.

Dr. Rocco Piazza understands that every woman’s journey is personal. That’s why he specializes in modern breast augmentation using Breast Tissue Preservation techniques—an approach designed to enhance the breast while protecting its native anatomy, sensation, and long-term support structures.

Rather than relying on older, more invasive methods, Dr. Piazza uses a preservation-first philosophy that minimizes tissue disruption, respects natural ligamentous support, and integrates advanced implant technology to create results that look natural, feel soft, and age gracefully with the body.

Breast augmentation is the most commonly requested procedure at The Piazza Center. Patients seek out Dr. Piazza not only for his technical expertise, but for his thoughtful, individualized approach and consistent ability to deliver refined, personalized results.

Breast Augmentation at a Glance

Goal:

Increase the size and enhance and shape of the breasts with Motiva® Ergonomix Smoothsilk® progressive gel and Natrelle INSPIRA® SoftTouch smooth, round, silicone gel breast implants.

Procedure:

A small incision is created within the inframammary fold, allowing precise access while preserving surrounding tissue planes. This location is chosen to optimize healing, scar concealment, and long-term structural integrity.

Implant placement is performed using a sterile no-touch insertion method, which reduces tissue trauma and lowers the risk of bacterial exposure. This technique supports the preservation-first philosophy central to Dr. Piazza’s approach to modern breast augmentation.

Anesthesia:

General anesthesia is applied via a laryngeal mask airway (LMA) to provide a smooth surgical experience.

Procedure Length:

Less than 1 hour

Timeline:

  • Day 3–4: Return to work and social activities
  • Day 5–7: Dressing removal
  • 2-3 weeks: Return to gym slowly increasing weight lifting
  • 6 weeks: ~80% healed, no restrictions
  • 3 months: Fully healed

Recovery:

During the first few days after surgery, the patient will experience some chest pressure or tightness in the breasts. Most patients recover very well with acetaminophen and ibuprofen, which are over-the-counter medications.

Aftercare:

The incisions are closed in multiple layers of dissolvable sutures. The incision will also be covered with a Steri-Strip™ and a clear plastic dressing called a Tegaderm™. This will stay in place until your first follow-up visit. This will also allow you to shower on the day after surgery.

Most patients will return to work the next day and are back to full activities without restrictions at 4 weeks. Bruising is uncommon with this procedure but can sometimes be visible on the sides of the breasts where Dr. Piazza has injected anesthetic medication.

Your Breast Augmentation Consultation

Dr. Piazza believes that exceptional breast augmentation results begin with thoughtful, data-driven planning and a deep understanding of each patient’s anatomy and goals. During your private consultation, you’ll discuss what has led you to consider breast augmentation and how you want your results to look, feel, and integrate with your lifestyle.

A key part of this process is the use of Crisalix 3D imaging technology. This advanced system allows Dr. Piazza to evaluate your breast volume, chest wall shape, rib cage, and overall torso proportions in three dimensions. Rather than relying on cup sizes or estimates, Crisalix provides precise insight into how different implant options may interact with your unique anatomy.

Using this information, Dr. Piazza develops a customized treatment plan that aligns implant selection, placement, and modern tissue-preserving surgical techniques with your body’s natural structure. This approach helps achieve more predictable, natural-looking results while supporting faster recovery and long-term stability.

Throughout the consultation, Dr. Piazza empowers patients by openly discussing implant technology, surgical technique, recovery expectations, and timeline options. At The Piazza Center, patients set their own pace—ensuring they feel informed, confident, and excited about every decision before moving forward. You can trust that Dr. Piazza and his team will always prioritize clarity, education, and your individual needs.

Your Custom Breast Augmentation Procedure

Surgery Day & Anesthesia Experience

Dr. Piazza carefully plans every detail of your breast augmentation well before the day of surgery to ensure natural-looking results and a smooth, predictable experience. Modern breast augmentation is as much about how the procedure is performed as it is about the final result. By using tissue-preserving techniques and efficient surgical planning, Dr. Piazza minimizes operative time while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure in a fully accredited ambulatory surgery center near The Piazza Center. Most procedures take less than 1 hour.

This allows patients to remain deeply relaxed and comfortable without the need for full general anesthesia, supporting faster recovery and a smoother overall experience.

Since 2013, Dr. Piazza has worked exclusively with the same board-certified anesthesiologists, Dr. Melissa Cady and Dr. Holly Helms, ensuring consistency, safety, and seamless communication throughout your care. What Are My Breast Implant Options?

Although most women choose cohesive silicone breast implants, Dr. Piazza offers all breast augmentation patients a full spectrum of breast implants in both silicone and saline. Implant selection and the shape of a patient’s natural breasts affect the preferred surgical technique, but minimizing any signs of surgery is always a top priority.

Material

Popular implant material options include:

  • Cohesive silicone (or “gummy bear” implants): Our most popular selection, these implants have a natural look and feel, and hold their shape even when damaged.
  • Silicone gel: These implants are approved by the FDA for women ages 22 and up. They closely mimic the look and feel of natural breast tissue more than saline implants.
  • Saline: These implants are made of a silicone shell that contains sterile saltwater. These FDA-approved implants are for women ages 18 and up.

Size

For accuracy, implant sizes are measured by volume in cubic centimeters (cc) rather than cup sizes. The ideal implant size is one that gives you attractive curves while maintaining balance with your frame and anatomical proportions. Patients can choose between a more dramatic increase or a subtle enhancement.

Shape

Select either round or anatomically shaped (“teardrop”) implants. Shaped implants are typically best for those with little natural breast tissue.

Profile

In this context, profile indicates how far your breast projects from your chest. A low-profile implant features a wider base with less projection, while a high-profile implant features a narrower base with more pronounced projection.

Placement

Implants may be placed either under the pectoralis muscle (submuscular), above it (subglandular), or a blend of both wherein the top of the implant is placed below the muscle while the lower part is placed below the breast tissue (partial submuscular).

Incision Placement

Options for breast augmentation incisions include:

  • Periareolar: A semi-circle around the bottom of the areola
  • Inframammary: A line hidden along the crease under the breast
  • Transaxillary: An incision hidden in the underarm

Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift

A breast augmentation makes the breasts fuller. It enhances their shape and can correct minimal sagging. A breast lift rejuvenates the breasts by raising them on the chest, tightening any degree of lax skin, and reshaping the nipples if necessary.

For women with significant sagging in their breasts who want to enhance the size and appearance of their breasts, Dr. Piazza often combines breast augmentation with a breast lift. Read more about breast augmentation & lift surgery on our blog.

Galaflex and Strattice

Dr. Piazza offers innovative techniques and products to address patients’ needs effectively. Strattice is an FDA-approved regenerative tissue matrix that supports implants and is used largely to help reduce the recurrence of capsular contracture. Galaflex is commonly used as an “internal bra” to strengthen weak tissue, correct implant malposition issues, and proactively help support the tissue in patients with thin or loose breast tissue. Dr. Piazza is one of the top surgeons using Galaflex in the Austin and San Antonio area.

Breast Tissue Preservation: A Smarter Approach to Recovery

Breast tissue preservation enhances healing by minimizing unnecessary internal irritation and supporting a more efficient early recovery. This enhanced recovery experience is possible because of the following factors:

  • Tissue-preserving technique: Minimizes internal inflammation and reduces unnecessary trauma.
  • Low-inflammatory implant profile: Helps support a calmer, more comfortable early recovery.
  • Above-the-muscle placement: Allows immediate arm mobility and decreases muscle-related tightness.
  • Faster return to daily life: Many patients resume work in about three days, often without prescription pain medication.

Together, these elements create a faster, more comfortable recovery experience designed to protect both your healing process and the long-term quality of your results.

What Will My Recovery and Results Be Like After My Breast Augmentation in Austin?

Your recovery plan begins long before you enter the operating room. Dr. Piazza creates detailed surgical guides to ensure minimal trauma and procedure time. Due to this innovative and highly specialized approach, patients can enjoy their results almost immediately.

Typically, patients report minor soreness, and they are able to return to their daily activities within a few days. Minimal bruising rarely occurs, and the vast majority of patients take only over-the-counter pain medication. This short and relatively comfortable recovery period is a significant benefit of choosing

What to Expect With Nipple Sensitivity After Breast Augmentation

It’s common to experience changes in nipple sensitivity following breast augmentation, and we want you to feel fully informed about what that might look like during your recovery. Some patients notice increased sensitivity, while others experience temporary numbness or tingling. These changes are typically due to nerve adjustments during surgery and are often temporary, with sensation gradually returning over the weeks and months that follow.

Dr. Piazza uses advanced surgical techniques and a careful, personalized approach to minimize nerve disruption whenever possible. During your consultation, he’ll talk through what to expect based on your unique anatomy, implant placement, and incision type. Our team will also be here to support you through each step of recovery, ensuring you feel comfortable, confident, and cared for as your body heals.

What’s the difference between breast augmentation and breast implants?

Will my implants need to be replaced?

What is an alternative to breast implants?

Can breast augmentation correct asymmetry or reduce the appearance of sagging skin?

Can a breast augmentation be combined with nipple correction surgery?

Can I combine breast augmentation with other procedures?

Does breast augmentation affect nipple sensitivity?

Yes, breast augmentation can affect nipple sensitivity. Some women experience increased sensitivity, while others may have decreased or even lost sensation. Most patients regain normal sensation within a few months. It is important to discuss this with Dr. Piazza if you have an concerns.

Can you breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Yes, many women can still breastfeed after breast augmentation. However, it depends on factors like the surgical technique used, the location of the incision, and whether milk ducts or nerves were affected. It is important to discuss this with Dr. Piazza during you consultation if you plan on breast feeding after any breast enhancement surgery.

What’s the difference between breast augmentation and breast implants?

Breast implants are placed within the breasts during breast augmentation surgery. Many people incorrectly use these terms interchangeably.

Will my implants need to be replaced?

While breast implants are not meant to last a lifetime, they don’t have a specific expiration date. In the past, the FDA recommended replacing implants every 10 years; today, many women have had their implants for more than 20 years. I perform elective implant exchange for patients who want to change the aesthetics of their implants. I also perform revision surgery if an implant ruptures, or there are complications from the original surgery.

What is an alternative to breast implants?

Women who want a modest increase in breast volume (about a cup size) without breast implants might consider fat transfer breast augmentation. I remove fat from an area where it’s unwanted (such as the belly or thighs) using liposuction, process it with the REVOLVE™ fat transfer system, and then inject the purified fat into the breasts. I also combine breast implants with fat transfer to enhance the cleavage and to smooth out the transition between the implant and the upper chest, as well as other areas.

Can breast augmentation correct asymmetry or reduce the appearance of sagging skin?

Absolutely! I welcome cases that may appear more challenging, and I frequently combine techniques to correct asymmetry or reduce the amount of excess skin while creating fuller, shapelier breasts with implants. I often perform a breast lift with an augmentation for women who have excess skin due to weight loss or aging.

Can a breast augmentation be combined with nipple correction surgery?

Yes. I often enhance the final results of breast augmentation procedures by performing nipple correction surgery to reshape stretched, enlarged nipples, or fix inverted nipples. I discuss my techniques for performing these procedures on my blog.

Can I combine breast augmentation with other procedures?

Yes. Combining breast augmentation with complementary procedures such as liposuction and tummy tuck surgery is a popular and effective solution for women who want to address multiple cosmetic concerns at once. This combination procedure is commonly known as a mommy makeover. Whether you’re focused on improving the appearance of your breasts, or you’re looking for a complete rejuvenation, there are a number of effective surgical procedures that can be combined to exceed your cosmetic expectations. There are also a number of non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments that may suit your needs. During your consultation, Dr. Piazza will answer any questions you have about how to achieve an optimal overall result.
