This 54-year-old female from South Austin came to see Dr. Piazza to discuss the possibility of breast reduction surgery to reduce the size of her breasts. She is an avid runner like many other active women in Austin, Texas. However, she had become extremely self-conscious about the size of her breast. She would wear a minimum of 2 sports bras for her daily jogs. During her initial consultation, Dr. Piazza explained the different breast reduction techniques and discussed the short scar procedure known as the SPAIR technique. This innovative technique allows for a shorter scar than traditional breast reduction methods, and improves the overall breast appearance. To perform the SPAIR technique, tissue is removed from around the nipple and the areola in a semicircular fashion, and the breast is reshaped in a manner which maintains the natural curves running from the outer portion of the breast over to the inner chest wall. Dr. Piazza also explained that her symptoms of discomfort would be relieved by reducing the size of her breasts if her breasts were truly the cause of these symptoms. Dr. Piazza met with her the day before her surgery at his office at Seton Southwest. Both Dr. Piazza and his registered nurse, Hayley, explained what each medication would be used for after surgery. Hayley carefully explained the post-operative instructions so that she would have realistic expectations of her recovery course. Dr. Piazza planned his pre-operative markings on the patient’s breasts in the tranquil environment of his photo suite rather than rush to place markings in the short time before surgery the next morning. In surgery, Dr. Piazza removed almost 3 lbs of skin, fat and breast tissue from her chest while sculpting her breasts to create a pleasing shape. He also reduced the size of her areolas and centered her nipples and areolas over her breast mound. After surgery, she recovered well and was back to work 10 days.
