The Comparison at a Glance
Patient: Anyone choosing a daily facial sunscreen from a medical practice
Desired Goal: Pick the right SPF for your skin, your budget and any pigment concerns
Product: Pavise Dynamic Age Defense SPF 30, EltaMD UV Clear Tinted SPF 46, with Skinbetter Sunbetter TONE SMART SPF 68 for reference
Price: $148 vs $45 at our shop, as of October 2026
Technique: Clear 100% mineral vs tinted hybrid with iron oxides vs tinted mineral compact
Timeline: Sunscreen works the day you wear it, and only if you reapply
Why This Matters: We sell both of these sunscreens, and they are not interchangeable. One is a clear mineral formula with treatment ingredients built in. The other is a tinted formula with iron oxides at under a third of the price. Which one fits depends on your skin tone, your pigment history and how much you want to spend. Individual results vary.
Patients ask us some version of the same question every week: is Pavise Dynamic Age Defense worth $148 when EltaMD UV Clear Tinted costs $45? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you need the sunscreen to do.
Because we stock both, we have no reason to push you toward one. They are built on different ideas. Pavise is a clear, 100% mineral sunscreen that doubles as a treatment step. EltaMD UV Clear Tinted is a hybrid sunscreen with a light tint from iron oxides, and it costs far less.
We have also included Skinbetter Sunbetter TONE SMART, because it comes up in the same searches. It is a tinted mineral compact, and it is not currently on our shelf. Below is what each one actually contains, using the manufacturers' published labels, and where each one comes out ahead.
The Short Answer
Pavise Dynamic Age Defense SPF 30 is our pick if you are recovering from a laser, peel or microneedling, if tinted sunscreens never match your skin tone, or if you want one 100% mineral step that also treats, with tranexamic acid and niacinamide built in. It goes on clear on every skin tone, so there is no shade to match. EltaMD UV Clear Tinted SPF 46 is the budget pick, and its iron-oxide tint gives it the stronger evidence for visible light and melasma. Skinbetter Sunbetter TONE SMART SPF 68 is a tinted mineral compact for people who want mineral-only filters and a tint in one product.

Clear vs Tinted: What the Tint Actually Does
This is the biggest difference between the two sunscreens we stock, so it is worth being precise.
Standard sunscreen filters are designed for ultraviolet light. Visible light, the light you can see, also reaches the skin, and in people prone to melasma and other pigment problems it can contribute to darkening. A 2020 review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology made a simple point: to protect against visible light, a sunscreen has to be visible on the skin. The ingredients that do that job are iron oxides, the pigments that give tinted sunscreens their color.
EltaMD UV Clear Tinted lists iron oxides in its ingredients. So does Sunbetter TONE SMART. Pavise Dynamic Age Defense does not. It is deliberately clear, and Pavise markets it as transparent on all skin tones.
Pavise does describe Dynamic Age Defense as protecting against visible light (its own site's FAQ refers to blue light protection). That is the manufacturer's claim. We have not seen independent published data for it, and we do not treat it as the same thing as an iron-oxide tint. If visible light protection is your main reason for buying a sunscreen, the published evidence points to a tinted formula.
We cover the melasma side of this in more depth, including how tinted and clear mineral sunscreens differ for pigment-prone skin, in our guide to zinc oxide and tinted sunscreen for melasma.
100% Mineral vs Hybrid Filters
Pavise Dynamic Age Defense uses zinc oxide as its only UV filter. Sunbetter TONE SMART uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, also mineral only. EltaMD UV Clear Tinted is a hybrid: 9% zinc oxide plus 7.5% octinoxate, a chemical filter.
Neither approach is unsafe, and EltaMD markets UV Clear for sensitive skin prone to acne and rosacea. Many patients do well on it. Some patients with reactive skin, or patients fresh out of a laser or peel, simply prefer a mineral-only formula, and that is where Pavise fits. It is one of the reasons we keep it on the shelf for post-procedure patients, once their provider has cleared them to wear sunscreen again.
The other practical point is coverage. Clear mineral sunscreens have a reputation for leaving a white cast on medium and deep skin tones. Pavise attributes its transparency to the particle size and shape of its zinc oxide, which it calls DiamondCore. Because it has no tint, there is no shade to match.

Sunscreen Plus Treatment: What Is in the Pavise Formula
This is where Pavise pulls ahead. Dynamic Age Defense is built as a treatment, moisturizer and sunscreen in one, so it can take the place of a separate morning serum and moisturizer. Its 15% zinc oxide is built on DiamondCore®, Pavise's patented diamond-augmented zinc oxide, and around it sit tranexamic acid, niacinamide, astaxanthin, pine bark extract (Pycnogenol), milk thistle extract (silymarin), licorice root extract and squalane. We explain the technology in What Is DiamondCore?
Pavise states that tranexamic acid is there to help fade the look of stubborn discoloration and redness. Tranexamic acid is a well-known ingredient in pigment-focused skincare, but Pavise does not publish its concentration, and we would not expect a sunscreen to replace a dedicated pigment routine. Think of it as a useful extra in a step you are already doing every morning.
EltaMD UV Clear Tinted has a shorter, simpler list of supporting ingredients: niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid) and lactic acid in an oil-free base. That simplicity is part of why it suits so many skin types, and part of why it costs less.
Our team used Pavise daily for three months before we put it on the shelf; we wrote up what we found in Pavise, tested on our own team.

Price: Why EltaMD Is the Value Pick
There is no way around this: EltaMD UV Clear Tinted is the better value. At our shop it is $45 for 1.7 oz (48 g). Pavise Dynamic Age Defense is $148 for 30 mL. Per gram or millilitre, Pavise costs roughly five times as much.
Sunscreen only works if you use enough of it and reapply it. A sunscreen you use generously every day will protect you better than an expensive one you ration. If $148 would make you skimp, buy the EltaMD and use it properly. We would rather you do that than stretch a premium bottle.

Where Skinbetter Sunbetter Fits
Sunbetter TONE SMART SPF 68 is a pressed compact rather than a lotion. Its filters are 10% zinc oxide and 5% titanium dioxide, it contains iron oxides for its tint, and Skinbetter describes it as tone-adapting with 80 minutes of water resistance. It is a 0.42 oz (12 g) compact.
In other words, it combines two things our shelf currently splits between two products: mineral-only filters, like Pavise, and an iron-oxide tint, like EltaMD. The compact format also makes it easy to reapply over makeup. The trade-off is that a compact is harder to apply in the generous amount sunscreen needs, so many people use it as a top-up rather than their only layer. It is not currently on our shelf.
Our honest read
Pavise Dynamic Age Defense is the sunscreen we reach for after procedures and for patients who want a clear, mineral-only formula that also treats. It disappears on every skin tone and folds a treatment step into your SPF. EltaMD UV Clear Tinted is the better buy on a tight budget, and its iron-oxide tint gives it the stronger evidence for melasma. Pavise's visible light claim is its own, and we do not treat it as equivalent to a tint.

Our Pavise guides
Pavise vs EltaMD: Common Questions
Is Pavise Dynamic Age Defense tinted?
No. It is a clear, 100% mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide as its only UV filter and no iron oxides. Pavise markets it as transparent on all skin tones, so there is no shade to match.
Does Pavise protect against visible light?
Pavise states that it does. That is the manufacturer's claim, and we have not seen independent published data for it. The published evidence for visible light protection centers on iron oxides, which Pavise Dynamic Age Defense does not contain.
Pavise or EltaMD for melasma?
For most melasma patients, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides is the better-supported choice, which points to EltaMD UV Clear Tinted. Pavise contains tranexamic acid, which Pavise says helps fade the look of discoloration, but it has no tint. Your provider can help you decide; our melasma sunscreen guide explains the reasoning.
Is EltaMD UV Clear Tinted a mineral sunscreen?
Not entirely. It is a hybrid: 9% zinc oxide, a mineral filter, plus 7.5% octinoxate, a chemical filter. Its tint comes from iron oxides.
Is Pavise sunscreen worth $148?
It depends on what you value. You are paying for 100% mineral filters, a clear finish on every skin tone and treatment ingredients such as tranexamic acid in the same step. If you mainly want strong daily protection at a fair price, EltaMD UV Clear Tinted at $45 is the better value.
How does Pavise compare with Skinbetter Sunbetter?
Both use mineral-only filters. Sunbetter TONE SMART SPF 68 is a pressed compact with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and an iron-oxide tint. Pavise Dynamic Age Defense SPF 30 is a clear cream with zinc oxide alone and treatment ingredients. Sunbetter is not currently on our shelf.
Which sunscreen should I use after laser or microneedling?
Some providers prefer a mineral-only sunscreen on freshly treated skin, which is one reason we stock Pavise Dynamic Age Defense. When you can start wearing sunscreen again depends on your treatment, so follow your own provider's aftercare instructions.
How do I remove mineral sunscreen at night?
Zinc oxide is designed to sit on the skin, so a light cleanser can leave some behind. Pavise Gentle Amino Powerwash is formulated to remove mineral sunscreen and makeup in one pass; a thorough double cleanse also works.
