The Beginning.
When I was 8-years-old, I dreamed of being able to help children feel normal, be accepted, and have an opportunity to live without judgement. When I was 12-years-old, I saw photographs of the life-changing worked performed by Austin Smiles that ignited the fire inside of me to become a Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon. From that moment, I committed to an 18-year educational journey to become a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In October 2019, I attended my third mission trip to Latin America with Austin Smiles. This particular trip to Guatemala was special for many reasons: 81 children evaluated; 48 successful and safe operations performed; mentorship with my colleagues, but I also brought my parents who volunteered alongside me. I finally had the opportunity to show my parents the immediate positive impact we can have in our world with the skills and techniques I acquired on my educational journey.

This year, Austin Smiles celebrates 35 years as an organization dedicated to caring for the cleft community locally and abroad! Austin Smiles is committed to ensuring, no child is denied a chance to receive life-changing surgeries, and the necessary care to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
